Mid Week Motivator: Encouragement

Credit Mua Loa Photography

Starting this blog just over two years ago, my goal was to tell my story of weight loss. Beginning over at Blogger and later moving over here at WordPress a year ago. Later this year I will make the move to my own home on the web.

Often it can feel as if my words are being sent out into a void. After all, my blog is rather small and the interwebs is so vast. I also don’t push my posts onto my fb friends, and refrain from asking them to read it.
I don’t get a lot of comments (but I have slowly gathered likes and follows here. Thank you!). So its easy for me to forget that my words are having an impact. People are reading it. This was brought home to me the other day.

A friend surprised me by complimenting my writing skills. As well as a post from earlier that week.

It was enough encouragement for me to continue on with writing this blog and other stuff.

It just goes to show you never know when you are having an impact. Your hard work is being seen. If it isn’t now, it will be.

You just never know.

Why Bother To Blog?

There are as many reasons that people blog as there are blogs. It has been said that the golden age for it has passed. What more can possibly be said? Why even bother to craft a post and promote?

Because a blog gives us a voice.
Even as new forms of social media emerge, the blog still stands. As our attention spans shorten to microseconds, we still crave more than what a tweet can give us. It is a place to tell story, our story.

Blogging forces a writer to write
Blogging means scheduling posts (usually). This means one must sit down and write these posts. It gives the writer a goal to meet. A self imposed deadline. The more we write, the better we get at doing it. By publishing a blog, you are creating an expectation for more posts, delivered in a timely manner.

But EVERYTHING seems to be covered
This is not necessarily a bad thing. Reading blogs helps you to see what your blog could be about. Just as with poorly written books, one can learn from a poorly executed blog. And as well as a well executed one. Discovering what you can do better for a topic is invaluable. Again your voice matters.
However, I would reccomend finding a focus for your blog. What do you see lacking or want to see covered differently?

But still, why bother to blog?
For some its simply another avenue to promote their online presence or business. Lets face business and social media are together for a reason. It is where the audience is these days.

Yes, some are more well known or even famous. But it took them years to build up their audience. What matters most is being genuine. Adding to a conversation or being relational. Blogging is not just about page views or monetizing your corner of the internet. It is about having the the guts to publicly say something.

This is why I believe blogging is here to stay. There will always be people who have something honest and genuine to say. That will always win out over the latest social media app or website. It is why I continue on with blogging. Why my best friend is working on my website.
Perhaps one day I will have said all I needed to say and the blog will no longer be in existence. Perhaps not.
Until then, I will continue to post.

What are your thoughts on blogging?

Those Sexy Blog Posts

Not my Hershey, could be his cousin though

Blogging is not easy or for the faint of heart. In my first blog, it was more of a journal only available online. I stopped writing it when I realized I did not know what to write about. Starting up this blog, (and soon to be website ) was different.

Firstly, my writing skills had improved from that first blog. Not only technically, but I also had gained confidence. Having recently finished the first draft of my novel ( a story I had been carrying with me since my teens). Finally, I had a story to tell. Becoming healthy, gaining confidence in my body and my writing. I found my voice.

That is where I began. Telling the story of how I became healthy. The longer I wrote, my voice began to expand into other subjects. Our lives are not lived in these separate categories, at least not as much as we like to think. The more I realized this, the more I began to focus on my faith, writing, running and eating well as a whole. Each aspect feeds into another and not writing about them feels false to me.

I am not a weight loss expert, but I am an expert on my weight loss. I am not a theologian but what I am learning about God is valid for me to write on it. When I write about writing, it focuses more so on my journey in this so far.

I just hope to reach others out here in the vastness of the internet. To help give you a boost, to encourage as I have been encouraged. Which is why I tend to not jump on latest internet band wagon. Because, so often whatever is making the rounds is just not in my wheelhouse.

I could chase after the sexy subjects, blog about yoga pants or condemn a certain film that has been blogged to the death. Adding my voice to the glut already crowding my Twitter and FB pages. It could get me the comments or retweets and likes. Perhaps even new followers.

I could do that, or I could be authentic.

After posting such articles, my new readers would quickly discover I am not that kind of blogger. Just as quickly they would unfollow me and move onto the next blogger. I leave the sexy, internet is on fire posts to those bloggers who do have those subjects in their wheelhouse. I will continue to learn and grow this blog. Continue to grow my authentic voice in the hopes it helps others. When I do write about a sexy subject, it will be when I have something to say authentically and from my heart.

Question For You, Dear Reader
What draws you to read a blog and typically how long do you follow one?

I’ve Been Nominated!!

I have been plugging away at this blog for a while now ( just over a year, first at Blogger and now here). Today my dear friend and fellow blogger Janet ( check out her blog on Living with Anxiety and Panic Disorder www.livingwithanxietyandpanicdisorder.wordpress.com ) and Honest Reviews, great stuff on both!) nominated me for a Leibster Award! First thank you Janet for nominating me for this, even though I admit I did have to do some research about it.

This award motivates bloggers to work hard

It provides exposure to small bloggers

It helps to build god relationships with other bloggers

It is an opportunity to share more about you with others

It is easy and good fun

Once someone nominates you, follow the steps below

2- Post 11 facts about yourself

3- Answer the 11 questions posted by the person who nominated you

4- Nominate 10 bloggers with less than 200 followers that you think deserve some recognition

5- Inform those bloggers that you’ve nominated them!

So here it goes!

10- Journaling helps clarify my thoughts and I do it before I write anything.

11- I would not be who I am today if I did not follow Jesus.

And now for Janet’s questions for me.

1-Why did you decide to start blogging?

After getting healthy I had people approaching me about how I did it and decided blogging would be the best platform.

2- What is your biggest dream in life?

I hope to be able to support myself fully by writing within five years.

3- If you could have dinner with one person living or dead, who would it be and why?

This is hard but I honestly think a meal with Audrey Hepburn would be amazing. She lead such an interesting and loving life and having a conversation with her over a good meal would just be wonderful!

4- If you could change one thing about your, what would it be?

Nothing. I am exactly where I need to be at this point in my life.

5- Have you ever fired a gun?

Not yet, would like to try it at least once.

6- Would you rather trade some intelligence for looks or looks for intelligence?

Neither, I have exactly the amount of intelligence and looks I can handle hahahaha!

7-What is your favorite joke?

That is really silly, Why six afraid of seven? Because seven eight nine!

8- What is the worst present you have ever received?

None come to mind. Anytime someone puts the time and effort into a gift then how can it be bad?

9- What is your worst fear?

Not living a full life.

10- Is there anything about the opposite sex you just don’t understand or comprehend?

Loaded question! EVERYTHING!

11- Do you want to build a snow man?

Very badly, let’s do it!

Confession time, I honestly do not have a list of blogs to nominate and pass this along to. Getting nominated was great news then I began to feel guilty about this. I only have two that I would recommend taking the time to read and even follow. One belongs to Janet Mickley who nominated me and the other is a young lady who has begun to follow my blog. A college student named Cece I spent an evening reading through her posts and found them to thoughtful, intriguing and most of all full of young wisdom. Check her out her blog Excuse My Truths at www.excusemytruth.wordpress.com
